About the project
“Lauter Frauen” tells the stories of women from around the world who fought for suffrage, education and equal rights, most of them in the 19th and 20th centuries. Some names are world-famous; many are almost forgotten today. The portrait wall places them side by side as equals. The “Random biography” button deliberately brings lesser-known lives to the front. The name is German for “nothing but women” – and for “louder women”.
Four views
In the mosaic, all portraits sit side by side in staggered rows. You can move and zoom it with your finger, mouse or keyboard. The list view shows the same people sorted by name, year of birth or year of death. The timeline arranges them by lifetime and shows who lived at the same time. The map shows where they were born or died. All views contain the same people; the list works especially well with screen readers.
Where the content comes from
This site is a demonstration. Data about the people comes from Wikidata (CC0), the portraits from Wikimedia Commons and are in the public domain or CC0. The life stories are excerpts from Wikipedia, licensed under CC BY-SA 4.0. Each person links to their sources; the authors of the texts are listed in each article's revision history. The map draws land, lakes and borders from Natural Earth (public domain).
The data was compiled automatically and has not been editorially reviewed. Errors are possible.
